I just came back from my monthly 3-day voyage. And it is nice to see in Google that my blog is still ranked no 1 if the public search for unit trust consultant or unit trust agent. Alhamdulillah.

What I normally learn from my 3-day journey, I’ll share with you. In anything you do in life or plan to do. Whether selling and marketing of unit trust, insurance, takaful, MLM, kambing atau lembu, or to develop your own business etc. To success, it only takes three factors.

The top 3 factors are:

1. Intention – when there is a will, there is a way
2. Decision - you have a solid decision to do it
3. Determination – whatever obstacle come to you, you continue and learn. Do or Die.

The selling techniques, skills and product knowledge are secondary. The inside of you is the fundamental and the most important.

How many business’s faculty lecturer in university, never done any business. They only teach.

How many unit trust consultants attended the selling techniques, motivation talks and the product knowledge but never do sales.

How many engineers, executives, managers, teachers that don’t love their job but still continuing it despite they have an intention to do business on their own.

How many fresh graduates that know it is difficult to find a job now yet still searching for it when the opportunity to develop their own business is wide open. 

Why they do what they are doing. Because of they have only the intention but they don’t yet make the decision. Intention only is not enough.

Why some unit trust consultant became top producer in 2007 but in 2008 do not qualify for any incentive. Because of lack of determination. So you have the intention and made the decision, but it is still not enough. You and I must have all the three factors to succeed.

For more than 3 months, I didn’t visit my eldest brother. Last night me and my wife went to their food outlet at Bukit Bintang for chit-chat and strengthening our blood-relationship.

He is active with cycling team and the chairman of www.way2ride.com society. I spoke about my jogging that has started for more than a week now.

So he told me his experience practice cycling with Malaysian national team. He said for a start where they want to build their stamina. The team will at first take the time as their parameter to complete their exercise. It starts with 1-hour a day. It is not like taking 80-km a day. It is not about the distance. It is about TIME.

When a week completed, they go for a 2-hour cycling. Then after that they start varying their speed. That is how the professional practicing.

In the same way, the public mutual agents especially the new ones could start by giving their time to see their clients. I would suggest you give 10% of your time for a start every day to see people your prospect. 10% = 2 and a half hours. Then you start increase it to 3 hours. I give 4 hours a day to see my clients.

So in unit trust business or any other business, to develop them we need to develop the behaviour, the pattern. Like in cycling, when they give one-hour every day, they develop their leg-cycling pattern. The more time they give, their leg become familiar with the pattern and they can cycle faster and further within the same one-hour. So as their lung, their breath.

When we go out of the house and our agency office, see our unit trust prospect or existing unit trust clients, we develop the new consultant pattern. The more we give our time, the better we can present to our clients, the faster and the more people we can meet in the same hour.

Remember, first give your TIME. Your skills will be developed.

It is interesting to learn from FM89.9 radio about crowd sourcing. I’ve learned about out-sourcing when I was in corporate life way back in 2003.

Crowd-sourcing is even bigger thing. It is about collecting content or comment from the crowd. For an easy example is the Akademi Fantasia. People or the crowd vote for those they like most. The crowd brand your product or services or even your political party. Another example is how Obama won the US presidential and how PKR do the same here in our beloved land.

They made a study that discovers Obama has more exposure in YouTube and Facebook compared to his competitor. Similarly the PKR or PR has more audience on their related blogs and websites.

Can we learn something from here? Yes…. We must take steps how we can also benefits from the new media and new techniques for our unit trust public mutual agents.

The 10 steps we should take to leverage the crowd sourcing to brand our unit trust agency are:

1. Create content from the crowd like Wikipedia and Linux
2. Pick the right crowd (focus on them)
3. Offer right incentive – not necessary money
4. Be friendly to your crowd. Crowd sourcing is not like out sourcing

I’ve visited my client demise (jenazah) at Kayangan Height yesterday Asar prayer. He is my mutual gold member’s client.

Many of TM’s management and officer attended the Jenazah Prayer. Even those who already retired came and give the last respect to the jenazah.

If you read this, please give sedeqah Al-Fatihah to the jenazah. He left 4 kids and a wife. This is the truth about life. Someday all of us will go. We will leave this dunia.

Where is our destination. Our first destination is kubur (the grave). Do you know how long we will stay there. The last man who dies when the first sangkakala being burst out will be in there for 40,000 years, waiting for the second sangkakala ditiup, where all of us will go to a big land called Padang Mahsyar. 

There in Padang Mahsyar another 50,000 years waiting for Hisab (resurrection) and crossing the bridge of Sirat. The longest, smallest bridge journey we’ve never experience, 1500 years. How can we do it!!!

So what plan can save you there. Who will help you there. Will your money, your wife or husband or you mother, your father or your friends can help you there. If you are the one who think big but only for this dunia, think again. You and me must think bigger.

The overly-used “thinking out of the box” is become useful if we think outside of this world (box), the place that everybody will go, whether we are ready or not, whether we are rich or poor, whether we are black or white, whether man or woman. All of us, are going to the grave.

We will bring only two things into the grave. That is Iman and Amal (our faith and our deeds). No car, no money, no house. Even our beloved wife or husband won’t follow us into the grave.

We will be asked 4 question in Mahsyar:

1. about our age – how you used it
2. about our ilmu (knowledge) – have you practice what you know
3. about our wealth – from where you get it and how you spend it
4. about our body -how you used them

Thus make wise decision, plan and action to think about this temporary world (60-80 years) so that it will give us benefit to the Akhirat that we will be there forever. All of us has been given 24 hours a day. Divide our time accordingly so we will benefit both world.

What you seed here, you will reap there. like all the IT expert say “garbage in, garbage out. The place to make effort is only in this world. No time to pray in kubur. No sedeqah to give when you already dead.

Think Big, Think Bigger and Begin with the End in Mind. Begin with the Akhirat in Mind.

I’ve set to do 13 rounds jogging, I’ve completed 13 rounds. That is life. You need to set your goal before you start anything.

   • I’ve attended OSK seminar at Jln Ampang office. Based on the seminar. KLCI is expected to reach 960 by end of the year. 

After 10-round jogging at the park in front of my house, I read a book by Robert E Kelley on How to Be a Star at Work, just to cool off my body before I take bath.

Very surprising to me, I’ve read the book before, somewhere in 2004 or 2005 but I could not get the message. May be at that time because I was still in makan gaji position (complacent) which I don’t give a damn about my time and reading book and try to understand it fully.

Robert has done a research to Bell Lab (part of AT&T) engineers and other officers there. All data gathered, interviewed done, gather them in one place etc. To cut short, many of them think that why some people can produce more than the rest, become the star, is because of the:

• stars are smarter, have higher IQ
• stars are better problem solvers and more creative
• stars are more outgoing
• stars are risk takers

He has gathered 45 factors altogether. But none of it is correct.

The answer is:

“it was not what is in your head that made you stand out but HOW you used what you had”

So what does this mean to you. Everyone can become the star if we know how to used what we already had properly and timely.

I learned myself today how to be a star unit trust consultant in terms of sales, marketing as well as recruiting and building the Public Mutual agency.

I ask permission from him to share his experience before I write. Many people are like my friend. They work with corporate and after sometime get bored. They try to venture into business with the idea of putting one leg first before they jump.

With limited knowledge and outside business world experience or street smart business idea, many would try to fork out their hard-earned money and invested in a small business like selling ladies’ accesories, burgers, goreng pisang, restaurants etc.

After putting their money, hire a few staff , and few months went by. They see no profit. Even they are losing money every week. Cannot tahan ma… It is a normal respond you will hear from those who never start a business and facing with the situation. Many will be very negative. And thus they don’t continue. They lose thousands of ringgit. “OK la, at least I can gain a knowledge on starting a business” they said. And I agreed with them.

What lesson can be learnt here is that for you to start a business especially during tough times like this. You must be careful about investing your money in business that you are not 100% sure if it is suitable for you. Another is that you must “Begin with the End in Mind”. Do you think that you will still be in the business for another 5 years? Or you want to do it for part time only.

Another secret is that, many if not all that start their own business have never had a business experience. Thus, they are lacking many of the backbone business skills. They think the product is the No 1 factor in their business. Study shows that the main factor is on the human-to-human communication then goes to the product. Like what Lee Iacocca (Ford and Chrysler Top Mgmt) says it is not what you know, it is who you know and how you present it to them.

One important thing that I learned from my 4 years experience in the business is that sales and marketing is the backbone of your business. Of course the product can’t be the lousy product. See for example the competition between Celcom, Maxis and DiGi. I know which product is the best because I came from there. But I know why people go for another product. Because of their marketing!!! Aha…

So, before you venture into a business:

1. equip yourself with sales & marketing
2. hone your communication skills

The easier and cheaper way is to join a business that is already established and you become their distributor or agent. They will provide thousands of ringgit training (sales, marketing, communication) for literally FREE. You can take your own sweet time to success. No time pressure, minimal capital, lots of friend to support you. And you will be surrounded with positive people.

Last Saturday, I’ve conducted a training that never been done before. It take me more than 2 hours to prepare the slide the night before. I finish the slide at 2:30am Saturday.

The training was at 2pm – 4:15pm. So, you see that to present for the 2-hour training, you need to prepare at least 2 hours for the slide if you do it for brand new topic. Therefore, whenever you can attend or being offered for the training, try you best to come. You can learn many things from it.
